HAND TOOL WOODWORKING

These workshops are intended for people interested in working wood with hand tools.  All work will be done with hand tools- power tools will not be available.  Beginning and continuing hand-tool woodworkers are welcome to participate in all the workshops, and the mix of skill levels provides a productive and supportive environment. You will be introduced to the preparation, use and care of hand planes, marking tools, chisels, saws, and other hand woodworking tools.  You will learn to mill and dimension stock, sharpen edge tools, lay out and cut joinery, make design choices, and, in general, begin to develop good woodworking habits.  These workshops provide an opportunity for people who want try woodworking for the first time, and for others who want to continue their woodworking journey.  The Open Workshop is for people who want to work longer on projects started in other workshops, and others who want to build something not offered in the directed workshops.  You will need to supply all materials and some tools- a list will be sent to all participants.  If you have any questions, please e-mail the instructor at DanParet@gmail.com

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING: Open Workshop
Complete a project started in another class, work on a project not offered, or use the workshop to get started with hand tool woodworking — the instructor will be happy to suggest a project and guide you through whatever you choose to work on.

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING:  Dovetail Stool Workshop
Learn to lay out and cut the through dovetail joint while making a sturdy step stool. The stool also incorporates a stretcher joined with wedged tenons. In addition to providing a good opportunity to work on your planing and sawing skills, this project will introduce you to the sliding-T bevel, the marking gauge, and woodworking layout tools. You will be encouraged to spend time working on your sawing skills.

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING: Carving Bowls and Spoons
In this class we will carve wood bowls and spoon using mallet tools and paring tools.  I will demonstrate the skills required to excavate, shape and finish carve your projects, walking you through the process with each object you make.  You will learn about a variety of carving gouges, sharpening, wood choices, designing, texturing and finishing.  You will need to pay a material fee of $35 to the instructor, which will cover materials for one bowl and one spoon.  

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING: Box Workshop
In this class we will work on a variety of wood boxes: sliding-lid box; shadow box; dovetail box; large and small totes; chests- the options are nearly limitless, and the mix of skill levels provides a nice variety of projects.

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING:  Mortise and Tenon Bench Workshop
Learn to lay out and cut the wedged tenon joint and the keyed through tenon, while making a sitting/display bench.  You will plane edges and surfaces, rip and crosscut boards, lay out complex joinery, and spend a fair amount of time getting to know the chisel and mallet, as well as common woodworking layout tools.

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING: Sharpening Workshop
Hand Tool Woodworking: Sharpening Workshop
This workshop is intended for people who want to learn to sharpen chisels, plane irons, and scrapers.  I will explain and demonstrate the sharpening processes and guide you through the sharpening of your own tools.  You will need to provide one new chisel and one card scraper. 

HAND TOOL WOODWORKING: Low Relief Carving Workshop
In this workshop we will explore low relief carving and painted low relief carving.  I will introduce you to carving tools and demonstrate low relief carving, walk you through the process of making your own carvings, and teach you how to maintain a sharp edge on carving tools.  All tools will be provided. You will need to pay a $20 materials fee to the instructor in the first class- this will cover wood for the first two sessions.  We will discuss wood choices for the remaining sessions
